It’s been 204 years since the opening 1000 Guineas, which was founded all the way back in 1814. The race is unrecognisable from all the changes here and to the sport over the years, from the opening year’s prize fund of £1050.
In recent years, the top prize has been claimed by trainer Aidan O’Brien. The Irishman won here in 2012 with Homecoming Queens, while he’s come out on top two years in a row. Can O’Brien secure a third straight win at Newmarket on Sunday? The bookies certainly think so, as the Irishman has the favourite coming in to this weekend’s renewal.
Happily comes in as the favourite for this race, despite a disappointing last outing in the Breeders Cup back in November. Coming from the owners and trainer of the last two winners does give her a bit of an edge. Happily has been the favourite heading in to five of her last six races, but will she follow up with a victory this weekend?
Four wins from seven is a strong way to warm up for this one, having picked up victories in September and October, before November’s disappointment. This is her first outing of the season, but we expect Happily to leave up to her favourite tag, and we’re backing another win for O’Brien this weekend at 5/2 with Bet365.
It’s another O’Brien entry that we’re looking at for an each way pick, given that there’s little long odds value to be found in this field. The only option is our eyes in I Can Fly, who comes here after three races, none of which have seen her finish outside of the top three. That strong form does make this seem like a decent each-way selection, while Happily’s stable-mate comes in to this renewal at 7/1 with Ladbrokes.
She returned to action mid-way through April, recording a third placed finish at the 1,000 Guineas trail stakes in Leopardstown, and we expect a strong showing here. Her highlight so far remains a victory in Dundalk back in September, but we think she can add to a short career with a strong run at Newmarket this weekend, so I Can Fly is our second pick from O’Brien’s stable.
