Aidan O’Brien had a terrific time at Newmarket this time last year, as he saddled the two winners of the 1000 and 2000 Guineas. That strong showing has many fearing him once again for this renewal, and with good reason. He heads here with four contenders in the field, a couple of which we really like ahead of Saturday’s race.
There’s quite a lot of competition at the top of this one, with four horses seemingly in among the favourites to win it. We like the longest priced of all of those, as we’re going with O’Brien’s Saxon Warrior ahead of this weekend’s meeting.
He finished up the year with a victory at the Racing Post stakes last October, one of O’Brien’s record 28 Grade 1 winners in a calendar year. He’s meaning to continue that form at Newmarket this weekend, and Saxon Warrior is certainly one to watch on that regard. He’s recorded three straight wins ahead of this one, starting as an 8/1 shot at Curragh back in August.
Warrior has to be seen as a contender here, while it’s hard to write off a man who has four wins here since 2008. After a terrific 2017, O’Brien has to look to step up with another major victory this weekend, and we think Saxon Warrior’s price of 6/1 with Ladbrokes is just too big to ignore given their form ahead of this one.
Our other pick from O’Brien’s stable is U S Navy Flag, who has drifted after a tough run of form of late. He may have disappointed in a first run of the season at Leopardstown last month, and that came after a poor showing at the Breeders Cup in November. However, those displays came after three straight wins, and a run of four victories and a runners-up spot across six races.
Overall, he was strong in 2017, and we think U S Navy Flag’s early form last time out is being oddly ignored by the bookies here. He should certainly be a bigger contender than he has been in recent races, while his price of 20/1 with Coral appears to be too big in our eyes. U S Navy Flag is our pick for an each way bet in this one.
