Chelsea v Man City Match Preview

Defending League Cup champions Manchester City will seek to become the first team since their local rivals to win this competition back to back. They approach their first shot of seasonal silverware with the dream of a quadruple still alive and kicking. Midfielder Kevin De Bruyne has played down hopes of such an incredible feat however, calling it ‘nearly impossible’.

For Maurizio Sarri, this game is more than just a shot of a first piece of managerial silverware. It’s been widely reported that the Chelsea boss is on the brink of the sack and couple more defeats could spell the end of his time in London. A cup victory would certainly bide him some more time but a comfortable defeat will pile even more pressure onto his shoulders.

Chelsea Team News: Blues sweating over Kepa

A beleaguered Maurizio Sarri has been handed something else to worry about in the run-up to this match as first-choice keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga is now a major doubt. A hamstring injury collected earlier in the week kept him out of Thursday’s test against Malmo and there is a real danger of him sitting out a second consecutive match. Willy Caballero or Rob Green are the senior deputies but both have lacked game time this season. Caballero has played just six times while 39-year-old Green is still waiting for his Blues debut.

Pedro likely to return

Kepa’s involvement in this game is in doubt but fellow Spaniard Pedro is looking likely to be involved. He too was absent for the midweek clash with Malmo as a troublesome stomach bug meant he felt too unwell to feature. It’s not the type of problem that needs more than a few days to resolve itself though, allowing the winger to return to the starting line-up this weekend. Callum Hudson-Odoi will likely make way for the ex-Barca man as the youngster is yet to convince his manager he should be higher up in the pecking order.

City Team News: Stones and Jesus missing as fixtures pile up

One day before Manchester City’s Champions League clash with Schalke, the English champions confirmed that neither Gabriel Jesus nor John Stones would take any part in the match. Guardiola stressed that their respective hamstring and groin issues were not big, simply enough for them not to make it on the Dusseldorf bound flight. While discussing the injuries, the Spaniard took the time to blame them on his side’s busy schedule. He stated that such problems are inevitable when there is a fixture every three days for a three-month stretch.

Blues facing shot of redemption

There’s absolutely no shame in losing away to Manchester City but for a side like Chelsea, losing 6-0 is an embarrassing result. The Blues can help put that result behind them though by beating the Citizens to the League Cup trophy this weekend. They’ll have learnt plenty from their hammering earlier in the month and with some tactical changers, the Londoners can keep the scoreline a little more respectable in this high stakes rematch.

Sarri to remain trophy-less

For a manager as renowned and experience as Sarri, it’s a little surprising that at 60-years-old, he’s yet to lead a team to a piece of silverware. This lack of winning success is likely to work against the Italian here as he comes up against a manger laden with trophies. His side’s heavy loss against City only weeks ago is something that will also hurt their chances at Wembley this weekend. Up against the same players who completely dismantled them earlier in the month, the Blues’ are going to be rather low on belief. They’ve fared poorly in the big matches outside of Stamford Bridge and this will be no exception so put your money on Pep’s men winning this one (8/15).

Aguero to prove his worth yet again

Sergio Aguero has netted six times during his last four appearances against Chelsea so he’ll be a definite handful for the Blues defence this weekend. The Argentine will get the nod over Gabriel Jesus even if the Brazilian pulls through in time for this match as he’s cemented himself as Pep’s number one striker. He’s been a regular source of big goals during his time in England and will not shy away from the big occasion this weekend, just as he didn’t during last year’s final. The 30-year-old fired past Arsenal at Wembley twelve months ago and has to be backed at 4/5 anytime for another cup final goal against a vulnerable Chelsea defence.

City to be quick out of the blocks

In the Premier League, Manchester City have netted themselves 41 first-half goals this season, a total far higher than any other team. Pep rarely instructs his men to begin matches cautiously, instead encouraging them to take advantage of any half-awake defences. Chelsea will defend better than they did against the Citizens earlier in the month but holding on for 45 minutes may be asking too much especially if Kepa misses out. The reigning League Cup champions are trading at 8/15 to win this Sunday but you can boost this to 7/5 by backing them to be ahead at half time and full time.
