Chester Cup Tips and Betting Offers, 3:35pm at Chester, Friday 11th May 2018
Approaching its 200th year, the Chester Cup is a prestigious race with a storied history. This flat handicap was first established back in 1824, and the 2018 edition rolls around on Friday. Having been increased to a distance of over two miles back in the 1990s, the race hasn’t undergone many major changes in recent years, but just who is worth backing for this year’s race?

The field in this one is led by Magic Circle, who can be found at 5/1 with Betfair ahead of Friday’s race. Stargazaer, a 6/1 chance with Coral, comes in as a close second favourite. However, this is a race which has a reputation for bigger winners, especially if you glance over the recent winners.
The last time the Chester Cup winner had a starting price lower than 10/1 was 2011, when Overturn won at 11/2. Since then, we’ve seen three 10/1 winners, along with victors at 11, 12 and 16s. That does suggest that this is a race which will have some value lurking in it some where, and there are a number of impressive contenders.
We’re going for a pick which is currently just under the 10/1 cut-off, as we’ve settled on Dubawi Fifty. The five-year-old is trained by Karen McLintock, and he’s made an impressive start, especially on turf. With five wins to his name overall, he’s really improved under his new trainer. However, wins at Ayr and Nottingham, along with a solid finish at Newmarket, suggest that Dubawi Fifty could put in a strong showing in Chester this weekend.
While his price of 9/1 with Bet365 isn’t quite in the double figures we were looking for, he’s just enough of an outsider for us to take him as our main pick. However, we are going slightly bigger for our each way pick, as we’ve settled on taking Nakeeta on the each way market too.
Nakeeta is a specialist on turf, with Iain Jardine putting him forward in almost exclusively turf races so far. The seven-year-old finished 2017 with a win at York, while his last race was a strong finish at the Melbourne Cup. We see this one in Chester being a good fit for the Scottish stayer, following a narrow defeat here in 2016. Coming back two years on, we think his price of 16/1 with Ladbrokes represents good value, especially with four places on offer almost across the board.
We expect a competitive race from Nakeeta here, who has the experience necessary to pull off a victory, along with the right price. We’re going with him each way alongside Dubawi Fifty for the victory as our Chester Cup betting tips.
