England v Costa Rica Tips and Betting Offers, Thursday 7th June 2018, Elland Road, Kick off: 20:00
England return to friendly action on Thursday night, as they face a ghost from Brazil 2014. Costa Rica topped England’s group four years ago, as they crashed out of the group stage. Gareth Southgate must avoid a similar fate this time around, but what can he get from his side’s final warm up friendly before heading to Russia?
England v Costa Rica Betting Tips
England come in to this clash as heavy favourites, with the Three Lions priced at 4/11 with Coral. The draw can be found at 7/2 with Bet365, while Costa Rica are 10/1 with Betfair for the victory. However, the visitors did manage to pull off a draw when these two met at the 2014 World Cup, so could they pull off a similar result in this trip?
The hosts are expected to ring the changes ahead of this clash, with Southgate trying out a few alternatives. While it’s a little late to make any major changes, he’ll want to spread out the minutes between the squad before the serious business gets underway. Jack Butland, Harry Maguire, Danny Rose and Jamie Vardy are expected to come in to the side.
There’s also Liverpool duo Jordan Henderson and Trent Alexander Arnold, who joined up late after the Champions League final. It’s hard to see Southgate not handing them a start after they missed the Nigeria game. They could each take up a slot in the four man midfield, with a 3-4-3 expected again.
While England impressed in their meeting with Nigeria, there were draw backs. Part of that came as they struggled when Nigeria went man for man in the second half. The bad news for the Three Lions is that Costa Rica are set to start with a three-man backline, and they could have a midfield six when you include the wing-backs.
We expect the pacey visitors to cause problems, and with a 3-0 victory over Northern Ireland under their belt from the weekend, they’re bound to be full of confidence. There’s plenty of talent within this side, as Bryan Ruiz and Joel Campbell are set to start in advanced midfield positions. They should cut through the England defence, so both teams to score seems like value at 11/10 with Ladbrokes.
Meanwhile, we see a goal for a man who has been in the spotlight. Raheem Sterling needs to up his game after his blatant dive last weekend, and we see him responding. He’s been in excellent form for Man City this season, and his price of 17/11 with 888Sport is good value in our eyes, so we’re backing him to score any time.
