At the top of the betting as things stand the three horses floating around the 6/1 mark are Rover Frost, Diese Des Bieffess and William Henry. There are doubts about River Frost’s involvement, so we will focus on the other two for now.
The Nicky Henderson-trained Diese Des Bieffess has impressed thus far, the five year old winning two and coming second once from his three hurdles to date. Indeed his last run was on the winter track at Kempton on Boxing Day in the 32Red Casino Novices’ Hurdle. He ran in second that day, five length back from the winner If The Cap Fits, from Harry Fry’s stable. Available at best odds of 6/1 with Ladbrokes and others, Diese Des Bieffess could well go one better here given that he’s carrying a favourable weight of just 11-2.
There will be plenty of challengers of course, with stablemate William Henry chief among them. The eight year old has won four and landed two second places from eight races, and though he was pulled up in a novices’ chase at Cheltenham in November, we think the Kempton track will suit him and odds of 7/1 with Betfred offer some appeal.
The Paul Nicholls-trained Topofthegame is another who could feature, priced at 9/1 with William Hill. Sam Twiston-Davies in booked in for the ride and the six year old gelding has been training well according to connections.
For us though, the value pick of the field has to be Harry Fry’s seven year old Bags Groove at best odds of 10/1 with Coral. The Irish gelding won his last two, at Kempton in November and Aintree in October, and with five wins from 11 starts already under his belt, he could trouble the leaders in the betting despite being joint top-weighted.
For a decent each way option, we like the look of 25/1 shot Dentley De Mee. Trained by Nick Williams, the five year has 3-1-2 form this season and with just 10-6 on his back, he could well get amongst the places if he gets a decent run. He has already proved his clean jumping ability and looked untroubled by the step up to this distance last time out when beaten by a head into second place at Ludlow in a handicap hurdle in which he carried 11-9.
