Runners and Riders News
The field has been narrowing down on this one, with many seemingly giving up and moving elsewhere. The dominant figure of Altior is the obvious cause of that, with the heavy favourite limiting opportunities here. As a result, we’re down to just nine in the field, which is slightly up on last year. However, it’s a big climbdown from 17 entries, many of whom went elsewhere in search of a more even field.
Odds and Preview
With Altior in such a dominant position, it’s hard to ignore him in this one. Other contenders moving on has left Altior sitting as the 2/5 favourite with Ladbrokes, which seems fair as he looks to follow up a victory here last year. Opposing him seems like a close to impossible task, after a 17 race unbeaten run. He can handle hurdles – with five wins from five between 2024 and 2024 – while his chase form is perfect. That makes him the obvious favourite in our eyes, and the rest of the field are going to have a tough time finding a way past the reigning champion.
Min is the closest challenger in the field, with Willie Mullins’ charge sitting at 9/2 with Betfred. However, we’re going a little bigger for this one. We think the value here comes in finding the each-way option. God’s Own is our pick for the next best outside Altior – making him a pick on the Without Altior market. However, we’re backing him outright for the win, as he’s a 33/1 shot with bet365 to win it. They’re paying 1/4 odds for three places, which seems good on the third placed finisher from this race last year. Since then God’s Own has landed a third, first and second place finish – which makes him a standout each-way option in a limited field.
Recent Winners
Recent years has seen the Champion Chase become quite open, with no real dominant figure. However, two of the last three races have been won by trainer Nicky Henderson, who has his eye on a record. He can move level with the record for wins by a trainer at this race, after moving within one of Tom Dreaper – who last won here back in 1970 with Straight Fort. The bookies seem pretty convinced that Henderson can do it this year, as Altior bids to match Master Minded’s back to back wins in 2008 and 2009.
2018: Altior – Jockey: Nico de Boinville; Trainer: Nicky Henderson
2017: Special Tiara – Jockey: Noel Fehily; Trainer: Henry de Bromhead
