Cheltenham Gold Cup Betting Tips and Offers – Cheltenham Festival Day 4

Cheltenham Gold Cup Tips and Betting Offers, 15:30 at Cheltenham, 17th March 2024

The most valuable non-handicap chase in Britain, the Cheltenham Gold Cup, returns once again on the final day of Cheltenham’s hugely popular festival. It promises to be a climatic ending to the four day event with a very competitive racecard.

At three mile and two and half furlongs, it’s as much about stamina as it is jumping ability on the New Course. Some truly fine horses have won this race since its introduction and it’ll be fascinating to see the next name to be added to the winners list.

With former favourite Thistlecrack having long since dropped out of this one with an injury, it is another of Colin Tizzard’s strong entries, Native River, who is taking up the favourite’s tag at 7/2 with Betfair. His win as top weight in the Welsh Grand National demonstrated what stamina the fairly young horse has and it’ll be a valuable asset here. His career record isn’t as intimidating as Thistlecrack’s but his greater chase experience could stand him in very good stead here. He’s impressed many with what he has showed this season and if he can put in another strong performance then we could well be the first past the finishing post.

It wouldn’t be beyond the realms of possibility for Colin Tizzard to grab a one two in this in this hugely prestigious race. Cue Card’s chances are so good that he has been vying for favouritism with Native River – but the enhanced odds offer of 20/1 on Cue Card with Betfair has to be one of the best value bets around! The veteran stayer looked to stand a real chance in this race last year before an uncharacteristic fall near the end. It’s a mistake he’d be very unlikely to repeat you feel and the hugely experienced chaser would surely be in the mix providing the ground is soft.

With Cue Card’s chances possibly resting on a favourable weather forecast, perhaps a more tempting each way bet would be on 10/1 shot (Betfair) Outlander. He is entered in the Ryanair Chase too but Gordon Elliot is expecting him to feature in the Gold Cup with a nice period of rest beforehand. He was edged out by Djakadam, who may also feature here, in Punchestown but got his revenge a fortnight later at Leopardstown when racing four furlongs further.

It was just his second start in two years racing at least three miles but he seemed to relish the extra length, staying on well to claim his first win of the season. On the downside, he has fallen twice in the past year so is a risk, but a justified one at his price.
